Elin Biofuesl was founded in 2005, with the aim of producing biodiesel with an emphasis on the use of waste products from raw materials.

Around the middle of 2007, the construction was completed and the biodiesel production plant began operation in the 2nd Industrial Zone of Volos. The plant, which has a production potential of 80,000 MT/year, uses vegetable oils as a raw material, of which 40% could be cooking oil.

Biofuels and especially biodiesel constitute the most direct and effective alternative solution to replace fossil fuels. For that reason, the EU has strongly supported their use with repeated directives.

However, the environmental benefit, (reduction of greenhouse gases), is not the same for all biofuels. When biodiesel is produced from fresh oils, it manages to reduce greenhouse gases from 20% to 55%. When it is produced from used cooking oil and animal fats, the corresponding benefit fluctuates from 83% to 90%.

This fact, in combination with the clear trend of governments and environmental organizations both in the EU and internationally, to increasingly support the use of biofuels from waste, led to Elin Biofuels’ decision to invest in this direction.

Thus, after thorough research, it has led to a collaboration with BDI- BioEnergy International AG, which is spearheading the technology of biodiesel production from waste materials for the construction of two new plants.

  • Plant for the distillation of biodiesel

We made the decision to go ahead with this investment of almost 5 million euros at the height of the economic crisis in our country, because we believe that the only way to surpass the crisis is by looking ahead and developing with productive, clever and environmentally consistent investments, despite the difficulties and adverse predictions.

The investment was completed last December, thanks to the support of Alpha Leasing, and was subsidised by the Development Law by 25%.
